According to the Post Office, they share: “No, you’ll need to send in your current passport as part of the renewal process.
“You won’t be able to travel until you receive your new passport.
“That’s why it’s so important to check your passport’s expiry date and renew it, if needed, ahead of time.”
That means you will not be able to travel abroad until your passport has been renewed, so it’s always important to check your passport before booking your trip away.
How long does it take to renew a passport in the UK?
If you have recently applied for a new UK passport, you can expect to get it within three weeks from when HM Passport Office receives your correct documents.
The GOV.UK website adds: “It may take longer than three weeks if we need more information, or we need to interview you. We’ll tell you this within three weeks.
“There are different turnaround times if you’re applying from another country.”
